During the 2021 pandemic lockdown, Zarina discovered two important things – she was a gifted amateur gardener and a prolific accumulator of rubbish from her home shopping activities.
Two years earlier at the HF Arts Festival in London, she presented her photography project, After the Rain, which discussed recycling waste export issues and its impact on her seaside home in Lumut and Pangkor Island. She thought we had made great progress towards sustainability, until the Covid19 pandemic hit.
She was forced to turn the lens onto her shrunken life in London during the travel restriction period. Between contemplations, Zarina planted and harvested homegrown flowers throughout spring and summer. Then she photographed them in upcycled bottles against packaging wastes, acknowledging the fact that she was both the creator and destroyer of her own environment.
