New Takes on Old Masters
This talk will explore how contemporary culture has been inspired by, referenced or remade Old Master paintings from the Western European tradition. Art historian Melissa Baksh will lead the audience through examples from contemporary art, film, television, music and fashion, to reveal how present-day culture continues to be informed by paintings from the past.
Melissa Baksh is a London-based art historian, writer, educator, and broadcaster/DJ. A desire to make art accessible and open up art collections to a wide range of audiences underpins her work, and she has delivered lectures, tours and workshops at the National Gallery, Hayward Gallery, Wellcome Collection and the National Gallery of Umbria. She has written for publications including The Guardian, The Times, The Independent, The Art Newspaper, Frieze and ArtReview on Old Masters, Italian Renaissance art, contemporary art, the colonial history of art collections and public art and statues. In 2019 she founded In Tune Art Tours: original, innovative audio-sensory art tours, and an alternative to the conventional museum tour.
